@northcape OK. Install any modern distribution, plug any class compliant USB interface and you have a good starting point
I'd say don't try to tinker unless you have a problem
You'll have to change your usual workflow and learn new softwares and plugins, though there are some Windows VST bridges if you don't mind tinkering
@ardour is THE free DAW but there are plenty of other options, free and non-free

I've followed a few people involved in #linuxaudio recently. It's something I know almost nothing about but I fear there would be major barriers (time/IT pain and money) to me moving from windows, e.g. things like audio interface/ driver compatibility and past investments in DAW and vsts with licence protection that I'm pretty sure fundamentally would not work. Since I *hate* being tied into Microsoft crap id still like to learn more about what *is* available and any suggestions for a good basic guide /info would be appreciated 👍 #musicproduction

Thanks to @harald and the build guide from Sonosaurus (and the Fish Shell for reminding me to sudo the install script), I'm up and running with the magical Paul Stretch algorithm, yeehaa!

Can't wait to stretch those tiny bits of tonal material from found sounds into dreamy synths (with the help of hard EQ and saturation for harmonics)

Key-sample in question for the curious.

First track is a regular Ableton sampler, where it works like a keyboard-sound

Second track is Pigments, where I use the same sample in the Granular Engine to make a pad-like sound.

I have no idea how the sample was made. The raw materiale was recorded at a local moor, so it's stuff like sticks, rocks, dry plants, gravel etc... The tonal texture could be isolated/extracted from a rock, they "sing" sometimes.

And while searching for a Paul Stretch solution for Bitwig, I found this really nice video from @polarity of layering pad sounds, utilizing the unique Pad-ish sound of the Supermassive Valhalla reverb recorded into several instances of PaulXStretch.

Love it!

A DAW without Paul Stretch would be a boring experience.
