From all of this, my advice for people searching for the right distro is
- Settle on distros with updated documentation and an active forum. Distro-specific advice is often the best.
- Learn to search for advice for systems related to yours, like searching for Ubuntu advice when on Zorin, or Arch advice when on CachyOS.
- Good advice can sometimes be better in forums related to popular, well-functioning software.
- Keep an eye on the date of the information you find. There is a lot of outdated advice out there.
- If you can’t find what you’re searching for, try asking in the distro-specific forum. Most forums I have experienced have been welcoming.
- Don’t rely on beta apps, if you don’t know your system.
- If what you want takes too much tinkering and you get stuck, consider changing your distro or the app you are trying to use.
- Specifically for music production: Learn the difference between ALSA, PipeWire and JACK, and remember, if you use PipeWire and your DAW of choice uses JACK, what you’re looking for when searching for advice is pipewire-jack.
